'A clear gap' – Huddersfield Town vs Wigan Athletic prediction: The72
Today at 05:38 AM
Wigan Athletic travel to Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night as two former Premier League sides meet in League One.
Wigan Athletic travel to the John Smith’s Stadium to face a Huddersfield Town side that has enjoyed a week-long break before this fixture.
The Terriers were eliminated from the FA Cup last month so while their League One rivals were in action over the weekend, they had ample time to prepare for the Latics’ visit. They come into the game off the back of consecutive third-tier wins, beating Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient over the past two games.
Michael Duff’s side 5th in the League One table but will be keen to force their way into the automatic promotion fight, with five points separating them and the top two at this stage.
As for Wigan Athletic, they come into this one having won four in a row across all competitions. They defeated Cambridge United in the FA Cup last time out, winning 2-1.
They beat Barnsley and Northampton Town in the third-tier prior, also overcoming Nottingham Forest’s U21s on penalties in the EFL Trophy.
It’s been a tough season to date for Shaun Maloney’s side but their recent upturn in form hopefully indicates a turning of the tide for the Latics as they look to kick on.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
James Ray
“This is a tougher game to call than some might think. Huddersfield Town are seven unbeaten in League One and have now won four home games in a row, but Wigan Athletic have found an upturn in form of their own recently.
“That said, it is hard not to lean towards a home win.
“The Terriers have a clear gap in quality and after a bit of an on-and-off start to Michael Duff’s tenure, they’re starting to show their true worth.
“I’ll go for a home win, but it should be a competitive game.”
Prediction: Huddersfield Town 2-1 Wigan Athletic
Harry Mail
“Huddersfield Town have turned a corner under Duff recently and will want their momentum to keep going.
“They are quietly going about their business at the moment as they look to chase down the teams above them.
“Wigan Athletic are a young side and play with a bit of freedom under the guidance of Maloney.
“You never know what Latics’ team will show up though and that gives them an air of unpredictability. This game will be a close one but in the end I can see the hosts getting the win.”
Prediction: Huddersfield Town 2-1 Wigan Athletic
