'A massive game' – Wycombe Wanderers vs Charlton Athletic prediction: The72

19/04/2025 13:19
Charlton Athletic head to Wycombe Wanderers on Easter Monday in a huge clash at the top of League One.
Charlton Athletic have had an excellent season and still have a chance of automatic promotion with two of the top three still to play. With just one automatic promotion spot to play for, CAFC are five points adrift of 2nd place.
Nathan Jones’ side are in excellent form too. They have won nine of their last 12 games and are unbeaten in their last five games.
The Addicks beat Northampton Town 2-1 in their last game. Luke Berry and Matt Godden scored the goals for CAFC to pick up all three points.
Wycombe Wanderers are in great form themselves though. After a blip at the start of Spring, Mike Dodds’ side have won their last three games.
The Chairboys are in pole position to secure 2nd place but have just a one-point lead over 3rd-place Wrexham. However, all of their final three games are against sides in the play-off places.
They beat Bolton Wanderers 2-0, away from home on Friday. That also meant Dodds’ side have kept three clean sheets in a row.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
Charlie Hodgson
“What an absolutely massive game this is. Both sides have such difficult run-ins, so they will want to get off to a winning start.
“Charlton Athletic are in great form and are very difficult to beat right now. However, the same can be said for Wycombe Wanderers, who have ground out three excellent wins recently.
“With that said, I think the home side will just edge this game. After three clean sheets in a row and a home crowd behind them, I believe Wycombe will defeat CAFC in this crunch clash.”
Prediction: Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 Charlton Athletic
James Ray
“This is a massive game at the top of League One. Wycombe Wanderers have stayed the course and are reaping the benefits amid Wrexham’s slip, but a third horse could enter the top two race with a win at Adams Park.
“Charlton Athletic would go just two points behind the Chairboys with a win and in their current form, it’s going to be hard to go against them.
“This is a clash between two real battling sides in Wycombe and CAFC, and it’s almost impossible to pick a winner.
“With nothing to split the two, I’ll go for a draw.”
Prediction: Wycombe Wanderers 1-1 Charlton Athletic
