'A rude awakening' – Wrexham vs Charlton Athletic prediction: The72

24/04/2025 03:21
Wrexham and Charlton Athletic meet in a massive game in the League One automatic promotion fight on Saturday.
Wrexham come into this weekend’s game with Charlton Athletic in the driving seat for a third consecutive automatic promotion. The results over Easter mean they sit 2nd in the table, two points ahead of Wycombe Wanderers behind them.
While the Chairboys were thumped at home by upcoming opponents CAFC, the Red Dragons emerged victorious on the road against Blackpool. Quick-fire second half goals from James McClean and Ollie Rathbone made the difference.
Phil Parkinson’s side are now unbeaten in eight, winning five and drawing three in that time.
As for Charlton Athletic, they head to Wrexham looking to keep their automatic promotion dreams alive with a big win. Three points would move the Addicks just one behind the Red Dragons and potentially ahead of Wycombe Wanderers, depending on how their game with Leyton Orient pans out.
Nathan Jones was full of fighting talk pre-game, and rightly so. His Charlton Athletic side have won seven of the last nine League One fames and are unbeaten in six.
Having endured a poor first half of the season, CAFC have fought brilliantly to give themselves a shot at a top two finish.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
James Ray
“Charlton Athletic boss Jones gave some characteristic fighting talk pre-game, so both sides are sure to be up for this.
“Wrexham will be looking to give the Addicks a rude awakening at the ‘circus’, as Jones referred to them. Home form hasn’t always been easy to come by for the North Welsh side but they’re unbeaten in five on their own turf and have been tight at the back.
“The same could be said for Wycombe, and Charlton ran through them. I just wonder whether the Addicks have a spirit few sides could deny right now.
“This could really go either way, but I lean to a huge away win.”
Prediction: Wrexham 1-2 Charlton Athletic
Harry Mail
“All the pressure is on Wrexham for this one. Phil Parkinson’s side are so close now and their fate is in their own hands.
“Charlton Athletic are one of the few teams in League One who they won’t want to be playing right now. They are fresh off the back of a whopping 4-0 win at Wycombe Wanderers.
“CAFC will be in confident mood and they will know that a win at the Racecourse Ground could throw them into the mix for the top two ahead of the final day.
“If Wrexham were to win though, they could seal promotion if Wycombe Wanderers were to lose so there is a lot on the line. It is such a tough one to call but I fancy the visitors based on their recent form.”
Prediction: Wrexham 0-1 Charlton Athletic
