Barnsley have been rejected by Portsmouth goalkeeper Will Norris, according to reporter Andy Giddings on X.
Barnsley agreed a deal to land the stopper in this transfer window. However, he has opted against the move to Oakwell.
Norris, 31, has lost his place at Portsmouth’s number one this season. He made nine appearances in all competitions earlier in the campaign and is under contract at Fratton Park until the summer of 2026.
As per Giddings on X, the player has turned down the chance to join the Tykes. Darrell Clarke’s side have since moved on to other targets and have now completed the temporary addition of Aston Villa ‘keeper Joe Gauci until the the summer.
Barnsley are currently sat in 9th place in the League One table and are two points off the play-offs. They lost 2-1 at Wycombe Wanderers last time out and have been beaten in their last three games.
Barnsley rejected by Portsmouth’s Will Norris
Barnsley could have seen Norris as someone to boost their goalkeeping department.
He is experienced in the third tier and would have been a useful acquisition.
However, it wasn’t to be and he appears to be settled down south in Portsmouth.
Pompey landed him in 2023 and he was their number one last year as they won promotion to the Championship.
Mousinho explained his decision to drop him in October last year and said, as per BBC Sport: “It wasn’t an easy decision and Will’s been brilliant for us during his time here.
“I just felt it was a change that we needed to make – he spent every moment on the pitch last season and has done [so again] so far this year.”
Norris played for Cambridge United from 2012 to 2017 before Wolves snapped him up.
He went on to play eight matches for the Midlands club and was loaned out to Ipswich Town during his days at Molineux.
The Watford-born man linked up with Burnley in 2020 and provided back-up for the Clarets.
Portsmouth then signed him after he caught the eye on loan at Peterborough United.
What now for Barnsley?
Barnsley have brought in Gauci after missing out on Norris and will hope their new boy can settle in quickly as they look to get their form back on track.
The Tykes are in action this weekend with a home clash against Burton Albion as they look to return to winning ways.
