Barnsley’s caretaker boss Martin Devaney is not in the frame for their vacant managerial position, as detailed in a report by the Barnsley Chronicle.

Barnsley will be competing in League One again next season following their play-off semi-final defeat to Bolton Wanderers. They fought back well in the second leg at the ToughSheet Community Stadium but ultimately fell a goal short as they lost 5-4 on aggregate.

Devaney, 43, was placed in interim charge following the Tykes’ decision to part ways with Neill Collins with only one game left of the season to play. He guided the Yorkshire outfit into the top six on the final day after their 1-1 draw at home to Northampton Town.

Barnsley made a good account of themselves under him against the Trotters but weren’t able to draw level. In this latest update regarding their vacancy in the dugout by the Barnsley Chronicle, he isn’t a candidate for the full-time job.

Who is this?

Barnsley managerial latest

Barnsley need to ensure that they get their appointment right as they look to mount another push for promotion to the Championship next term.

They have fallen short two years in a row now after losing at Wembley to Sheffield Wednesday in the last campaign.

The Tykes looked well on their way under Collins before their form stalled and they need to avoid a repeat of that.

It is expected to be a summer of transition at Oakwell but if they are still an attractive club to manage for someone and have potential to do well. A number of players are due to become free agents at the end of next month like Devante Cole, Herbie Kane, Nicky Cadden and Jordan Williams.

Meanwhile, loanees such as Liam Roberts, John McAtee, Jamie McCart and Conor Grant are due to return to their parent clubs.

They have been linked with Dominik Thalhammer over recent times but saw a swoop for the Austrian fall through, as reported by journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

What next for Barnsley?

Despite their loss to Bolton Wanderers, the future is still bright for Barnsley but they need to get someone with Football League experience.

They need a head coach who knows what it takes to get out of the third tier and has preferably done it before somewhere.

The likes of Rotherham United, Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City are coming down and all three will be eager to bounce back at the first time of asking.

Meanwhile, ambitious duo Wrexham and Stockport County are coming up and could both be a force to be reckoned with so it will be a tough league next term.

Barnsley’s former bosses Michael Duff and Paul Heckingbottom are available, although it remains to be seen whether they would be interested in going back to Oakwell.
