Birmingham City boss Chris Davies has said they will ‘look’ at Dion Sanderson’s situation this winter.

Birmingham City’s defender is facing an uncertain future with the League One side ahead of the upcoming January transfer window.

Sanderson, 25, has slipped out of favour with the Blues this season and has seen his game time dry up.

Davies has said, as per a report by BirminghamLive: “I said to Dion that ultimately he was the captain last season and started this season for me at centre-back, but then he picked up an injury which knocked his rhythm because he had played through the whole pre-season, others have come in and really taken their chance.

“Dion is an important part of the squad and we’ll need Dion, absolutely, in this run of games but they are conversations that I will have with him, around his game time and how much he wants to play. That’s something we’ll look at in January but, for the time being, Dion’s an important part of the squad and will be someone we’ll call upon in the next few weeks.”

Birmingham City defender update

Sanderson has made seven appearances in all competitions for Birmingham City in this campaign to date, two of which have come in the league.

He has fallen down the pecking order and struggles to get into their team ahead of Christoph Klarer, Ben Davies and Krystian Bielik.

The defender is under contract until the summer of 2027 but it remains to be seen if he will be staying put next month.

Sanderson joined the Blues back in 2022 but struggled for form in the last campaign as they ended up going down. They finished in the bottom three along with Rotherham United and Huddersfield Town.

He initially joined the Midlands outfit on loan before his switch was later made permanent.

The Wolverhampton-born man has made 78 appearances for Birmingham City altogether to date and has found the net on four occasions from the back.

He rose up through the academy ranks at Wolves and played for the Premier League side at various different youth levels before going on to play once for their first-team. They loaned him out as a youngster to Cardiff CitySunderland and QPR to get some experience before the Blues came calling.

What now?

Birmingham City have a big decision to make on what to do with Sanderson.

They are currently sat in 2nd place behind Wycombe Wanderers.
