Birmingham City will have to assess Alfons Sampsted after he ‘hobbled’ off on international duty with Iceland, as per reporter Neil Moxley on X.

Sampsted, 26, made his 23rd cap but went off with an injury and will now need to be checked on by the Blues. He is on loan at St Andrew’s from FC Twente.

Chris Davies is due to speak to the media in his pre-Shrewsbury Town trip press conference and should provide an update regarding the player’s condition.

Birmingham City take on a Shrews side on Saturday who have recently turned to former Wycombe Wanderers and QPR man Gareth Ainsworth as their new manager. They are currently bottom of the table and have won only two of their first 15 fixtures so far this season.

Birmingham City injury concern

Sampsted currently provides back-up to Birmingham City’s defensive ranks.

The Blues snapped him up on a temporary basis with a view to buy but he has struggled to get into their starting XI. He is due to spend the whole campaign in the Midlands.

Sampsted has made 12 appearances for Birmingham City in all competitions, eight of which have come in the league, but he isn’t a regular starter.

The full-back has been on the books at FC Twente since 2022 and has played 39 times for the Eredivisie club to date.

He started his career in his native country with Breiðablik. The Kópavogur-born man moved to Sweden in 2017 and had two years with IFK Norrköping.

Bodø/Glimt then lured him over to Norway and he went on to make 135 outings for the Eliteserien outfit before switching to Holland.

What now?

Birmingham City will be eager to get three points against Shrewsbury Town as they look to leapfrog Wycombe Wanderers to the top.

The Blues are two points behind the Chairboys and have a game in-hand.

Davies’ side drew 1-1 at home to Northampton Town last time out before the international break and were left disappointed against the Cobblers after their opponents scored a last-gasp equaliser.

It is yet to be known right now whether Sampsted will be fit enough to be part of their squad against the Shrews.
