Birmingham City are sizing up a shock move for Sunderland wonderkid Chris Rigg, reporter Alan Nixon has said on his Patreon.

Birmingham City have emerged as one of the EFL’s new powerhouses despite dropping from the Championship to League One last season.

The Blues spent big in the summer transfer window in their bid to build a squad capable of winning promotion back to the second-tier and the first time of asking, then potentially one that can push towards the top end of the Championship upon returning.

Further ambitious business will be eyed, but new reports have linked the club with a stunning swoop.

Writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon claims that Birmingham City are plotting a remarkable move for Sunderland wondered Chris Rigg. The 17-year-old has been linked with some of the world’s top clubs but he’s also on the radar at St. Andrew’s, it is said.

It is said that a move worth £10m could be made for the teenager midfielder, who has already become a regular starter on Wearside.

A step too far?

You can’t fault the ambition of Birmingham City whatsoever. And, after their big moves in the summer transfer window for the likes of Jay Stansfield and Willum Thor Willumsson, it’s clear they’ve got the money to back it up.

However, a move for Rigg just feels like a step too far.

The Sunderland midfielder isn’t the average prospect to emerge at a young age. He looks like a truly elite talent and if he is to move on from the Stadium of Light, it will be to a sizeable club at a high level of the game, and he’d likely find first-team action from the get-go, depending on just how high said club are up the food chain.

The Blues may have the money, but Rigg feels like he’d certainly be out of their reach.

Rigg’s season so far

After turning 17 in the summer, Rigg has been a regular starter for Sunderland, only putting him further on the radars of top clubs and apparently, Birmingham City.

He’s played eight times this season, chipping in with one goal. That takes him to four goals in 33 outings for the Black Cats.

He’s under contract until 2027, so with that and his elite potential in mind, it will take a big offer to prise him away from Wearside.
