Birmingham City striker Alfie May has admitted he was ‘very’ close to joining Huddersfield Town after their ‘unbelievable’ summer interest.

Birmingham City enjoyed a busy summer transfer window with a host of statement signings made in their bid to build a squad capable of storming to the League One title.

Striker Alfie May was among those recruited at St. Andrew’s with their financial muscles flexed to prise him away from Charlton Athletic. However, the Blues weren’t the only ones keen.

It seemed as though Huddersfield Town were set to sign the talisman, but he opted to join Chris Davies’ side instead.

Now, after netting his fifth goal in eight League One games for Birmingham City on Tuesday night against Huddersfield Town, May has opened up on just how close a move to Yorkshire was.

As quoted by Birmingham Live, the 31-year-old admitted that the interest shown in him by the Terriers was ‘unbelievable’ and that a switch to the John Smith’s Stadium was ‘very’ close. The pull of working under former boss Michael Duff was strong, but he was swayed and joined the Blues instead.

“Very, if I’m totally honest,” the Birmingham City star said when asked just how close the move was.

“The interest they showed me straight away was unbelievable and Michael Duff, as one of my old managers, made me the player that I am.

“It was a difficult decision. It’s football. There’s no hard feelings – hopefully. I haven’t spoken to Michael Duff yet. That time will come.

“As a player, when you get interest you hear little things, and Birmingham came in for me late notice. It’s one of those things that happens.”
