Bolton Wanderers defender Eoin Toal has been withdrawn from the Northern Ireland squad, as confirmed by their official club website.

Bolton Wanderers’ centre-back has now returned to the club. BWFC will need to assess him to determine how long he could potentially be out of action for.

Toal, 26, has made 22 appearances in all competitions for the Trotters this season, 19 of which have come in the league, and he has scored two goals. His contract at the ToughSheet Community Stadium runs until the summer of 2027 meaning he still has two years left.

Northern Ireland’s boss Michael O’Neill, who has managed Stoke City in the past, has told their website: “We are naturally disappointed for Eoin to withdraw so early on in the camp, however I am confident that Kofi (Balmer) can come in and make an impact.”

He added: “I’m looking forward to regrouping for these important warm-up games against very good opposition.”

Bolton Wanderers’ Eoin Toal injury latest

Bolton Wanderers will have to make checks on Toal over the coming days.

It would be a blow if he was sidelined, especially as they chase a place in the play-offs.

This campaign has been an injury-hit one for Toal and he hasn’t been able to play as many matches as he would have liked.

The Armagh-born man has been with the Trotters since joining them back in 2022.

He has since played 104 matches altogether and has scored 10 goals.

Toal helped Bolton Wanderers reach the top six in his first year under former boss Ian Evatt but they lost at the semi-finals stage to Barnsley over two legs.

They then made the final last time around but were beaten at Wembley by Oxford United in the end.

Toal was handed a new deal last year and said at the time, as per their website: “It’s a proud moment for myself and my family. Coming over here you want to kick on and do as well as you can. Everyone has made me feel so welcome since I joined. It’s flown by so I’m happy to extend my stay.

“When I first came over here, I just wanted to get one (appearance) and I’m just glad I’ve made so many. Hopefully I can make many more as the years go by. It’s great to be here. Playing for this club means everything so hopefully we can enjoy much more success together.”

What now for Bolton Wanderers?

The extent of Toal’s injury is yet to be known at this stage.

Bolton Wanderers lost 1-0 to Stockport County last time out and face Blackpool away after the international break.
