Burnley attacker Michael Mellon has emerged on the radar of Chesterfield, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Burnley have a decision to make regarding the future of the forward in the upcoming January transfer window. He is currently on loan with Stockport County in League One but is set to return to Turf Moor this winter.

Mellon, 21, was given the green light to head out the exit door on a temporary basis in the summer when the Hatters came calling following their promotion from League Two. However, he has struggled for game time since his switch to Edgeley Park and hasn’t been able to make an impact.

In this latest update regarding his situation, journalist Nixon has claimed on Patreon that Chesterfield are keen to land him next month.

The same source has also recently reported on Patreon that WalsallNorthampton Town and Fleetwood Town are admirers.

Mellon needs to be getting regular minutes at this stage of his career.

Therefore, leaving Stockport County and joining another team on loan in the Football League next month would be a sensible move.

He rose up through the academy at Manchester United and was a regular for the Premier League giants at various different youth levels.

Mellon parted company with the Red Devils in 2019 and was subsequently snapped up by Burnley.

The Scotland youth international is yet to make a senior appearance for the Clarets.

His father, Micky, is the manager of Oldham Athletic and he has also had spells in the past at Fleetwood TownShrewsbury Town and Tranmere Rovers.

Prior to linking up with Stockport County, Mellon had been loaned out away from Turf Moor in the past at Morecambe and Dundee to boost his development.

What now?

Mellon has been linked with a few teams over recent times like Walsall, Northampton Town and Fleetwood Town. Chesterfield have now seemingly joined the list of teams that want him.

Burnley will weigh up their options and decide where is best for him to go next.

The Spirerites were promoted from the National League earlier this year along with Bromley.

They are managed by former Wigan Athletic and Portsmouth man Paul Cook and are sat in 9th place in the table.

Chesterfield are only two points off the play-offs and are back in action with a home clash against MK Dons tomorrow.
