Cardiff City youngster Joel Colwill will be recalled from Cheltenham Town and loaned to Exeter City for the rest of the season, as per Jon Palmer.

Cardiff City loaned the 20-year-old to Cheltenham Town in the summer transfer window and his impressive form has caught the eyes of many.

Speculation has been rife over just where the young Welshman could end up, with several League One sides linked following his strong stint in League Two.

Now, the Bluebirds are set to recall him, reporter Jon Palmer has said.

After Wales Online stated that the Bluebirds are looking to test the youngster out at a higher level, reporter Palmer has since added on X that Cardiff City will be sending Colwill to Exeter City having decided to recall him from Cheltenham Town.

It marks a first shot in League One for the midfielder, who thrived in the fourth tier.

Colwill decision highlights potential

Colwill’s time served over the first half of the season at Cheltenham Town has proven that he can make the step-up to first-team action.

Whilst on loan with the Robins, Colwill has produced some impressive returns. In 28 total appearances, the young Cardiff City loanee has scored a total of nine goals and chipped in with three assists.

Six of these goals and all three assists have come in League Two competition. He has largely featured as a starter for Michael Flynn’s side, gaining valuable exposure to first-team football.

Colwill obviously has talent, and Bluebirds boss Omer Riza wants to develop both this and the young midfielder’s undoubted potential. A move a step higher up the football league ladder will be a good move for all parties.

Colwill to thrive off Exeter move

Colwill will thrive if Cardiff City do indeed sanction his move to League One. A half season with Exeter City will benefit him.

The youngster has already shown that he can handle the rigours of first-team action. The goals and assists that he has marked in all competitions whilst with Cheltenham Town are a testament to that.

However, a step up to League One will, obviously, bring a step up in both class and competition. The Grecians sit 14th in the League One table, 10 points shy of the play-off places.

Surrounded by a better level of player, and playing in a higher-level competition will be of benefit to Colwill. Whilst he he might not replicate his returns from League Two with Cheltenham, he will be able to hone and polish his potential.
