'Carrying momentum' – Charlton Athletic vs Leyton Orient prediction: The72

08/15/2024 05:52 AM
Charlton Athletic host Leyton Orient at The Valley this Saturday in an all-London League One clash.
Charlton Athletic won 1-0 away at Wigan Athletic on the opening day last weekend. Defender Lloyd Jones scored their winner at The Brick Community Stadium as they started the new season with an impressive three points.
The Addicks were beaten 1-0 at home by Birmingham City in the first round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. Their opponents went down to 10 men but they weren’t able to capitalise.
Nathan Jones has delved into the transfer market this summer to bring in the likes of Greg Docherty, Luke Berry, Will Mannion and Matt Godden, among others, to bolster his ranks. He has until the end of the window later this month to bring in any more players.
As for Leyton Orient, they were promoted from League Two in 2023 and have adapted well to the step up a division. They lost 2-1 at home to Bolton Wanderers last Saturday though.
Richie Wellens’ side bounced back though with a 4-1 victory over Newport County in the cup on Tuesday. They will face Millwall away in the next round.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
Harry Mail
“Charlton Athletic will be disappointed to have lost to Birmingham City last time out but the fact they are out of the Carabao Cup means they can fully focus on the league which means it may be a blessing in disguise for them.
“The Addicks secured a decent win away at Wigan Athletic and are carrying momentum into this season as Nathan Jones looks to get them promoted.
“I don’t think Leyton Orient will be as good as they were in the last campaign. Richie Wellens has done a great job in charge but I can see them losing at The Valley here.
“Charlton Athletic have strength in depth in their squad and should have too much for their opponents.”
Prediction: Charlton Athletic 2-1 Leyton Orient
James Ray
“Charlton Athletic showed in the week that they’re really not that far behind a Birmingham City side expected to walk this league. There are some great players on the Addicks’ books and with Nathan Jones at the helm, they should be a tough side to beat as they were last season.
“Leyton Orient will provide a tough challenge for the hosts though. There are some dangerous players they’ll have to watch out for, with Diallang Jaiyesimi sure to be out for revenge on his former club.
“However, I think the hosts have what it takes to keep Orient quiet.
“It might be a close one and tense at times, but I’ll say this ends 1-0 to Charlton.”
Prediction: Charlton Athletic 1-0 Leyton Orient
