Charlton Athletic defender set to sign new contract amid Championship interest

Charlton Athletic man Lloyd Jones is set to sign a new deal at The Valley despite interest from Oxford United and Wycombe Wanderers, as per Alan Nixon.
Charlton Athletic look much-improved this season and Nathan Jones will be hoping to take CAFC to the play-offs in League One for the first time since 2019.
Jones took over at The Valley just under a year ago and his first job was to stabilise the club. The former Southampton and Luton Town boss did that and this season they have given themselves an outside chance of a top six finish.
One man who has been crucial for them is Jones. The experienced defender has made 17 league appearances this season from centre back, scoring once against Wigan Athletic on the opening day.
The 29-year-old leader made the switch to Charlton Athletic from Cambridge United in 2023 and with the Englishman’s contract set to expire this coming summer there has been doubt over his future.
Fellow League One side, Wycombe Wanderers have already reportedly had a bid rejected for Jones this month, and Championship side Oxford United are also said to be interested.
However, despite this, it seems the Addicks are set to keep Jones around with Nixon claiming the defender is nearing a new contract at the club.
A positive sign
Jones snubbing interest from elsewhere, particularly in the league above, to stay at the Addicks is a very good sign for the club.
It shows the defender believes in the direction the club is heading.
Charlton Athletic have done well to hold their ground this month given they would have known they were running the risk of losing their defender on a free in the summer and this is certainly a good bit of January business from them.
Moving forward
Charlton Athletic currently sit 12th in the third tier, but they are just seven points outside of the top six as things stand.
They will need to finish the campaign well to make up that gap, but they definitely cannot be ruled out of the race just yet.
Defeat against Rotherham United this weekend was a small setback, however they have a huge clash against Bolton Wanderers on the horizon.
They know a win over Ian Evatt’s side would see them go to within one point of the Wanderers and close the gap to those above.
It feels like a massive game and one which could have big implications for both side’s chances of a play-off charge between now and May.
