Chelsea defender Brodi Hughes is attracting interest from Championship and League One clubs this winter, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke on X.
Chelsea have a decision to make regarding his immediate future at Stamford Bridge. He is also out of contract at the end of this season and is due to become available in the summer as things stand.
Hughes, 20, has risen up through the academy ranks of the Premier League outfit. He has been a regular for them at various different youth levels to date and is a former England Under-18’s international.
In this latest update regarding his situation by reporter O’Rourke on X, the youngster has emerged on the radar of some teams in the Football League. It remains to be seen at this stage which particular clubs want to land him between now and the end of the January transfer window.
Chelsea turned to Enzo Maresca as their manager last year after he won the second tier title with Leicester City. The Foxes went up along with Southampton and Ipswich Town.
Chelsea’s Brodi Hughes wanted in EFL
Hughes joined Chelsea at the age of eight and has never been loaned out by the London giants.
He could do with getting some senior football under his belt to get some experience.
His chances of breaking into their starting XI at the moment are slim due to the abundance of top quality options that they have at their disposal in his position.
Chelsea will also need to start thinking about whether they want to keep hold of him beyond the expiration of his deal in June.
He penned first professional terms back in 2022 but it is yet to be known whether he will be sticking around beyond this term.
Hughes said in an interview with the Blues’ website last year: “I’ve been at Chelsea for the majority of my life. I’ve been with some of the players here since I was eight years old, so we’ve built strong relationships. It’s nice to continue our journey together and progress through the age groups.
“When I was younger, there were so many Chelsea players to look up to. My biggest inspiration was John Terry, who was the Chelsea captain at the time. There was no one better to look up to. Having someone like that at the club helps you keep pushing and striving to achieve your goals.”
What now?
Time will tell whether Chelsea end up loaning out the centre-back to a team in either the second tier or the third tier.
Hughes is a name to keep an eye out for over the next couple of weeks.
