Wrexham head to Oakwell on New Year’s Day to face Barnsley in their upcoming League One match.
Wrexham come into their clash with Barnsley after winning 2-1 at home to Wigan Athletic in their last game. Striker Steven Fletcher scored a last-gasp winner for them against the Latics.
The Red Dragons were promoted from League Two last season along with Stockport County, Mansfield Town and Crawley Town. They have since adapted well to the step up to the third tier.
The Welsh outfit are sat in 2nd place in the table behind Birmingham City. They are only a point behind the league leaders but the Blues have two games in hand.
As for Barnsley, they are positioned in 7th. They are only a point off the play-offs.
The Tykes were beaten in the play-offs in the last campaign at the semi-finals stage by Bolton Wanderers. They also lost the year before in the final to Sheffield Wednesday.
They won 3-1 away at Peterborough United last time out. Donovan Pines, Davis Kellior-Dunn and Jon Russell got their goals at London Road.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
Harry Mail
“This won’t be an easy game for Wrexham and they will have to be at their best to get a win.
“The Red Dragons are unbeaten in their last eight games and have had a successful festive period.
“They will be full of confidence as they eye another promotion this term. Barnsley have won three of their last four and two on the spin.
“The Tykes appear to have turned a corner and I can see them frustrating the visitors here so I’m calling it a draw.”
Prediction: Barnsley 1-1 Wrexham
James Ray
“Home form continues to be the problem for Barnsley and you can’t help but feel it could cost them in the push for the play-offs if it continues into 2025.
“A clash with Wrexham is a real test on home turf with the Red Dragons in solid form and pushing for the top two. It is an opportunity for the Tykes too though, as Parkinson’s side aren’t the strongest on the road.
“Ultimately, I see this being a close game with the spoils shared. Wrexham are definitely capable of nicking all three points though.”
Prediction: Barnsley 1-1 Wrexham
