Birmingham City boss Chris Davies has said they are taking Lee Buchanan’s recovery ‘day by day’.

Buchanan, 23, hasn’t made an appearance yet this season due to injury.

In this latest update regarding his situation, Davies has said, as per a report by BirminghamLive: “Lee has been out for a long time, he has struggled with various niggles and things. He’s still making his way back day by day and we’ll see how he is. It’s to build him up, he’s just had so many setbacks. It’s not like he’s had one long-term injury, he’s had one, then another and another. He’s just trying to build some kind of continuity now, through training, in his body so it will last. We’ll try and get him some game exposure when we can.”

Birmingham City won’t want to rush Buchanan back in to avoid making anything worse.

He will face a battle to get into the starting XI in his position ahead of Alex Cochrane.

It will be a boost for the Blues when he is back though and he will give them more competition and depth in defence.

Buchanan made the move to the Midlands in July 2023 and penned a long-term five-year contract running until June 2028. He made 35 appearances in all competitions in the last campaign, 32 of which came in the league, as they were relegated from the Championship.

The defender rose up through the academy ranks at Derby County and was a regular for the Rams at various different youth levels before breaking into their first-team.

Buchanan went on to play 75 matches as a youngster at Pride Park before he was lured away by Werder Bremen.

The ex-England youth international spent 12 months in Germany and played 24 matches during his time abroad, 21 of which were in the Bundesliga.

Birmingham City then lured him back home to England and it turned out to be a disappointing first year for him with the Blues as they dropped down in League One. They finished in the bottom three along with Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United.

What now?

Davies’ side are back in action this weekend with an away trip to Blackpool in the FA Cup.

They won 2-0 against Exeter City in their last league outing.
