Exeter City are poised to sign Crystal Palace goalkeeper Joe Whitworth on loan, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon.

Exeter City are expected to see off competition from some fellow Football League sides to land the signature of the Premier League. He has been identified as their replacement for Viljami Sinisalo following his return to Aston Villa after his loan ended.

Whitworth, 20, appears to be a man in-demand this summer. Nixon reported last month that both Shrewsbury Town and Doncaster Rovers were interested in him.

However, in this latest update by the same source, the Grecians appear to be in the driving seat now. They are preparing for another year in League One under the guidance of former Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell.

They have so far delved into the market to bring in defender Jack McMillan from Partick Thistle on a free transfer and are eyeing more additions.

Exeter City poised to sign Crystal Palace man

Exeter City could see Whitworth as someone to compete for their number one spot.

If he is to complete a switch to Devon, both Shrewsbury Town and Doncaster Rovers will have to look elsewhere for a new ‘keeper.

The Shrews have seen Marko Marosi head out the exit door on a free transfer after the end of his contract. Meanwhile, Timothee Lo-Tutala has returned to Hull City following the end of his Rovers loan.

Whitworth started his career at AFC Wimbledon before switching to Crystal Palace and he has since progressed up through the academy ranks of the London outfit.

The Sutton-born man penned a contract extension in January last year which shows he is highly-rated by the Eagles.

However, his pathway into their starting XI in the top flight is currently blocked due to the options that they have in his position at their disposal. Therefore, a temporary switch away from Oliver Glasner’s side would do likely him good.

Whitworth made his Crystal Palace debut in a league clash against rivals Brighton and Hove Albion in March 2023. He has since played once more for the Eagles.

Exeter City latest

Exeter City finished 13th last term and will be looking to build on that.

Although he is young, Whitworth would be a promising signing and would be eager to show what he is all about.
