Exclusive: 'We're still learning' – Luke Berry addresses early Charlton Athletic form and maintaining promotion hopes

Charlton Athletic have been widely tipped to fight it out for promotion from League One but their early form has raised some questions.
Charlton Athletic started the campaign with three straight wins but have won just two in the 10 games since, raising some concerns amid hopes of a push for a Championship return.
Results haven’t been all negative with a huge win over Birmingham City followed by three draws against play-off contenders Stockport County, Barnsley and Wrexham. However, Nathan Jones and co would have hoped to sit higher than 12th in the table at this early stage.
New midfield ace Luke Berry insists the start is merely part of the process though as this new-look Addicks side continue to gel and get set in their ways.
Speaking to Sky Bet exclusively on behalf of The72, the Charlton Athletic man offered a brief assessment of the form they have found early on, saying:
“As a team, we’ve had an okay start.
“We’ve had a few good results and a few tricky results where we can learn from but it’s still early doors. We’re still quite a young team, so we’re still learning.
“We just want to try and do the best we can and pick up as many points.”
Promotion hopes and personal goals
Charlton Athletic man Berry went on to discuss the promotion hopes for this season, pledging to give what he can and chip in with goals wherever possible to help the Addicks achieve that goal.
“The main aim is to try and get promoted every season and we’re the same,” the 32-year-old said.
“Personally, for me, just try and get as many goals as I can and try and help the team as much as possible. If that helps us get promoted, then that’ll be a bonus.”
Berry has three career promotions to his name, two of which were with Luton Town. They rose from League One to the Championship with the midfielder before the shock play-off final win in 2023.
His first promotion came while with Cambridge United, returning to the EFL in 2014.
Tough fixtures continue
Things aren’t really easing up for Charlton Athletic in their bid to find improved form.
Up next is a challenging game against Exeter City, who have impressed in League One early on but find themselves coming into this weekend’s tie off the back of consecutive third-tier defeats.
A home clash with Peterborough United could present chances to take all three points but their potent attack will pose problems before clash with Huddersfield Town afterwards.
It could be a key run in the campaign as Berry and co look to prove their credentials again.
