'Fiercely competitive' – Charlton Athletic vs Rotherham United prediction: The72

Charlton Athletic host Rotherham United this weekend in a clash between two League One heavyweights at The Valley.
Charlton Athletic come into this challenging clash against Rotherham United looking to recover from their first defeat of the season against Reading last time out.
The Royals ran out 2-0 winners on home turf to end the Addicks’ perfect start to the campaign. Goals from Charlie Savage and Sam Smith condemned Nathan Jones’ side to defeat and the Welsh boss wasn’t afraid to make his feelings known post-game.
Nevertheless, the start has still be a positive one in South London. They sit 6th in the League One table with nine points from a possible 12.
Rotherham United on the other hand claimed their maiden victory last time out.
It had been a poorer start to the season than many envisaged from a much-changed Millers side under Steve Evans. They returned to winning ways with a statement though, defeating a previously impressive Huddersfield Town 2-1 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium.
As they head south to face Charlton Athletic, Evans will be hoping his side can start to put a run together to push up from 17th.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
James Ray
“Jones will be adamant his Charlton Athletic side offer a response after the loss to Reading last time out and on home turf, they should be in with a good chance of getting a result.
“However, Rotherham United will be riding a wave of confidence after their first League One win since Evans’ return. They’re going to be a player in the promotion picture but are just finding their feet after a summer of change.
“These fiercely competitive managers will provide liveliness from the touchline and that could reflect on the pitch. I can see it being a close game, and I’m not sure either will have the edge.
“I’ll go for a 1-1 draw here.”
Prediction: Charlton Athletic 1-1 Rotherham United
Harry Mail
“Charlton Athletic haven’t made a bad start to the new season at all with nine points from a possible 12. They were clearly disappointed by their 2-0 loss at Reading last time out though and will be keen to bounce back with a win.
“Rotherham United finally got their first three points against Huddersfield Town which should give them a lot of confidence. They have a very strong squad and an experienced manager in Steve Evans as they look to gain an immediate return to the Championship.
“This is a tough one to call and I can’t pick either team. I’m going to have to go for a draw.”
Prediction: Charlton Athletic 1-1 Rotherham United
