Former Leyton Orient and Walsall player Jason Demetriou has become the Chief Scout at Southend United, as announced by their official club website.

The ex-Football League defender has landed his first role in the game. He departed Roots Hall at the end of last season following the end of his contract and has now returned in a new position outside of playing.

Demetriou, 36, was a right-back and went on to make just under 600 appearances in all competitions.

He has now gone back to Southend United to bolster their recruitment department and their boss Kevin Maher has told their website: “It was important that we kept someone with Jason’s knowledge and understanding of the club around.

“We lost people this summer with experience, so it was important that we kept some about. Jason’s going into a coaching career that he wants to start off and we felt there was a need for an area that he can add to. So, I’m delighted to have him back on board and he will be great to work with the players at the right time and also in the scouting side of things as well.”

The London-born man went on to play 168 games for the Brisbane Road club and chipped in with five goals.

He left Leyton Orient to move to Cyprus in 2010 and had spells at AEK Larnaca and Anorthosis Famagusta before heading back to England.

Walsall snapped him up to boost their defensive department and he made 52 outings for the Saddlers during his time in the Midlands whilst they were in League One, finding the net on five occasions.

Southend United move

Demetriou linked up with Southend United in 2016 and spent eight years with the Shrimpers.

He played 253 games and played for them in the third tier, League Two and the National League.

The ex-Cyprus international has now gone back as he delves into his first job in scouting.
