Grimsby Town loanee Liam Smith is ‘certain’ to leave Cheltenham Town this summer, as detailed in a report by GloucestershireLive.

Grimsby Town landed the full-back on loan during the January transfer window.

Smith, 28, sees his contract with his parent club expire at the end of June.

GloucestershireLive claim he is poised to head out the exit door following the Robins’ relegation from League One.

The door could swing open for Grimsby Town to land Smith on a free transfer and they have a decision to make.

He was brought in this past winter on a temporary basis to bolster their defensive department.

The Scotsman played 11 times for David Artell’s side and chipped in with one goal to help them secure their Football League status.

Cheltenham Town landed him last summer after a successful trial and he made 15 appearances for them during the first-half of this campaign before he moved to Blundell Park.

Smith played for Rangers and Hearts as a youngster before going on to feature on 38 occasions for the latter in his early career, as well as having loan stints at East Fife, Raith Rovers and St Mirren.

He then had permanent spells at Ayr United and Dundee United before dropping down the border for the first time last year.

His time at Cheltenham Town didn’t quite go to plan but his move to Grimsby Town has helped him get some more game time and boost his confidence.

Artell’s men finished the season in 21st place and were seven points above the drop zone in the end after losing on the final day to Crawley Town.
