Cheltenham Town have released Liam Smith following his loan spell at Grimsby Town, as announced by their official club website.

Cheltenham Town have decided to cut ties with the defender after their relegation from League One.

Smith, 28, spent the second-half of last season at Grimsby Town after joining them on a temporary basis in the January transfer window.

The Robins have confirmed on their retained list that he will become a free agent when his contract expires this summer.

The door has swung open for Grimsby Town to sign Smith on a permanent basis if they want to.

He was brought in by the Mariners this past winter to bolster their defensive department.

The full-back went on to play 11 games for David Artell’s side and has chipped in with a single goal to help them stay up in the Football League. He played 90 minutes in their final day defeat away at Crawley Town last time out.

Smith moved down to England last summer after signing for Cheltenham Town after a successful trial. He then played 15 matches for the Gloucestershire outfit during the first-half of the campaign.

He started his career at Rangers before linking up with Hearst as a youngster.

The former Scotland youth international played 38 matches for the Jam Tarts and also had loan spells away from Edinburgh at East Fife, Raith Rovers and St Mirren to get some experience.

Smith then had permanent stints at Ayr United and Dundee United before moving down the border.

Grimsby Town have a decision to make as to whether to try and tempt him back to Blundell Park.

As for Cheltenham Town, they have a big few months ahead as they look to bounce back from their relegation.
