How is Jack Diamond faring at Stockport County since his Sunderland exit?

Sunderland cut ties with Jack Diamond at the end of last season following the end of his contract at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland decided not to extend the winger’s deal and he subsequently became a free agent. His time with the Championship side officially came to an end in late June and he weighed up his options.

Diamond, 24, rose up through the academy ranks of the Black Cats and was on the books of the North East outfit for his whole career before his summer exit. He was a regular for them at various different youth levels as a youngster.

Stockport County swooped to land him after they won the League Two title to boost their attacking department. They went up last term along with Wrexham, Mansfield Town and Crawley Town and have adapted well to life in League One so far under the guidance of Dave Challinor.

New challenge

Diamond has made eight appearances for the Hatters in all competitions since his move to the North West and has chipped in with a single goal.

He is enjoying regular game time at Edgeley Park and the move appears to have worked out well for him.

The attacker needed a change of scene and he linked up with a Stockport County team who have ambitions to reach the second tier at some point in the near future.

They are currently sat in 6th place in the table and are inside the play-offs on goal difference.

Diamond played 45 games for Sunderland and scored twice. He also had loan spells away at Harrogate Town, Lincoln City and Carlisle United in the Football League to get some experience.

After signing for Stockport County in June until 2027, Challinor told their website: “We feel that with a pre-season under his belt and a platform to perform, we can get him back to the form he’s shown previously and we’re really excited to start working with him. He’s another quick ball carrier, likes to take defenders on and has exceptional pace. He can play anywhere across the front and adds more threat to what is already a really strong looking attacking unit.”

What now?

Diamond will be eager to continue getting regular opportunities in the third tier.

The Hatters are back in action after the international break against away at Charlton Athletic.
