Plymouth Argyle midfielder Adam Forshaw has admitted he shouldn’t have left Brentford for Wigan Athletic back in 2014.

The Liverpudlian left the Bees for the Latics after two years in London.

Forshaw, who is now 32-years-old, believes he should have stayed put and not moved back up north.

He has told Brentford’s website: “I was living away from home and that was quite tough at times as I was young, so to get the chance to move back to Liverpool, and on a long contract, ticked a lot of boxes for me.

“Not long before, Wigan had been relegated from the Premier League and won the FA Cup. Uwe was also there, and everyone knew we had a good relationship.

“But I was proved wrong – it wasn’t the right move for me. In my head, there was a good reason for it and I did genuinely think it was going to take me on in my career. I can openly say I got it wrong.”

Plymouth Argyle man reflects on Wigan Athletic move

Forshaw’s switch to Wigan Athletic a decade ago gave him the opportunity to move closer to home at the age of 22.

However, Brentford ended up rising to the Premier League whilst the Latics ultimately went down to League One.

The Liverpudlian rose up through the academy ranks at Everton and was a regular for the Goodison Park club at various youth levels as a teenager before playing twice for their first-team.

Forshaw then joined the Bees and played 100 matches for them in the third tier, chipping in with 11 goals whilst they were still at Griffin Park.

Wigan Athletic snapped him up following their FA Cup win and relegation from the top flight but he spent only half-a-campaign at the DW Stadium.

He has since had spells at Middlesbrough, Leeds United and Norwich City before joining Plymouth Argyle in January on a free transfer after his contract at Carrow Road was terminated.

Forshaw has since made 11 outings for the Pilgrims as they look to survive on the final day.

Plymouth Argyle take on Hull City at home and need to win against the play-off chasing Tigers to survive.
