Birmingham City boss Chris Davies has said Lee Buchanan is back in ‘light training’ and will be an ‘important’ player for his side.

Birmingham City have been without the full-back so far this season due to injury. Summer signing Alex Cochrane has been operating in his position over recent times after joining from Hearts.

Buchanan, 23, made the move to the Midlands in July 2023 and penned a long-term five-year contract running until June 2028. He made 35 appearances for the Blues in all competitions in the last campaign, 32 of which came in the league, as they were relegated from the Championship.

In this latest update regarding his condition, Davies has said, as per a report by BirminghamLive: “We’ve got a couple of options, but the real hope is that Lee Buchanan can get a good base of fitness under his belt now because he’s back in light training with the team. If we can get Lee right, then Lee’s going to be an important player for us for the rest of the season.”

Birmingham City injury boost

Buchanan appears to be making good progress on his road to recovery.

Getting him back will be great news for Birmingham City and he will strengthen their backline.

However, they won’t want to rush him back in after his lengthy absence and will wait for the right opportunity to throw him back in.

The defender rose up through the academy ranks at Derby County and was a regular for the Rams at various different youth levels before breaking into their first-team.

Buchanan went on to play 75 matches as a youngster at Pride Park before he was lured away by Werder Bremen.

The ex-England youth international spent 12 months in Germany and played 24 matches during his time abroad, 21 of which were in the Bundesliga.

Birmingham City then lured him back home to England and it turned out to be a disappointing first year for him with the Blues as they dropped down in League One. They finished in the bottom three along with Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United.

Nevertheless, the club has had a new lease of life in the third tier and are sat top of the table above the likes of Wycombe Wanderers and Wrexham.

What now?

Buchanan is getting back up to speed and isn’t too far off now.

Birmingham City are back in action this weekend against Northampton Town at home.
