Wigan Athletic have struggled since their relegation back to League One two seasons ago.

A 12th-place finish last season was respectable after recovering from a points deduction and it was hoped they could kick on this year. That has not been the case though, and the Latics find themselves in 19th in the table after 14 games this term.

Over the summer, they did have a large turnover of players with 11 players leaving the club. The Latics lost one of their most prized assets in Charlie Hughes, who left the club for Championship side Hull City.

However, one man Wigan Athletic did keep hold of was Thelo Aasgaard. The 22-year-old has been one of few positives, chipping in with four goals in 16 games across all competitions.

He has been a regular since breaking into the side in 2020, having his best season so far last term.

What is Aasgaard’s estimated worth?

Aasgaard is an academy graduate at Wigan Athletic and he represents Norway internationally, registering 11 gaps for their U21s.

In recent weeks, he has been linked with Championship side Stoke City by The Sun. They have cited a price tag of £3m, but data suggests that at this early stage in his career, he isn’t worth that much.

According to FootballTransfers, Aasgaard’s estimated transfer value comes in at €1.6m (£1.4m), equating to less than half of the fee recently cited in reports.

The Norwegian is the Latics’ second most valuable asset, only behind Toby Sibbick at around €1.8m (around £1.5m.)

Looking to find form

Wigan Athletic and Aasgaard face a very tough test next time out as they head to in-form Barnsley in League One. Their opponents are unbeaten in five games in League One and have shot up to 5th in the table, just four points away from the automatic promotion places.

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

Aasgaard has been a key player this season and a shining light amid their struggles, so it will be hoped that he can play a key role in turning around their fortunes and leading the side up the division.

If not, it might not be long before teams in higher leagues look to prise him away and give him a shot at a higher level.
