Leyton Orient and Stockport County are both chasing a January move for Manchester United youngster Ethan Williams, Football Insider has claimed.
Leyton Orient and Stockport County are sat 7th and 8th in the League One table and will both be looking for ammunition to fire them into the play-off picture.
January will be the final chance for all EFL sides to finalise additions to their squads.
Now, it seems the League One pair are set to go head-to-head for a winter loan signing
Leyton Orient and Stockport County are named by Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke as admirers of Manchester United youngster Ethan Williams. It is said that both clubs have made contact with the Red Devils over a deal for the young forward with the club ready to send him out.
It is added that the O’s and the Hatters face competition from several other EFL clubs for the former Rochdale youth player.
Pedigree is evident
Leyton Orient and Stockport County target Williams has been with the Red Devils since November 2019 and has featured heavily for their youth sides, the U18s and U21s. The 19-year-old signed his first professional deal at Old Trafford last year after starring for the treble-winning U18s.
The left winger has 71 appearances tucked under his belt for Manchester United’s academy sides, during which he has scored regularly. He was most successful with the U18s, scoring 16 goals and registering 14 assists in just 39 games.
Williams has taken the step up to U21s in his stride. In 24 appearances he has scored seven goals and laid on four more.
Despite his lack of exposure to first-team football, the coaching set-up at Manchester United will have provided him with an undoubted footballing pedigree.
O’s and Hatters right to fight
January is the last opportunity for all EFL clubs to dip into their war chest and reinforce their squads ahead of a long slog towards May. In that respect, both Leyton Orient and Stockport County are equals.
Both League One sides will be looking for that extra something to propel them into the play-off fight. It will not be enough to be on the fringes for either side, they need to consolidate their places in the top six.
By signing him up to a professional deal, Manchester United think that Ethan Williams has potential. It is that potential that the O’s and Hatters are fighting for.
There is evidence that he has goals in him but, additionally, he also can turn provider. That dual threat, along with his pedigree and potential, would make for a tasty signing for League One clubs like the Leyton Orient and Stockport County.
