Manager adds to uncertainty over immediate future of Blackburn Rovers midfielder

Blackburn Rovers loanee Jake Garrett’s future at Bristol Rovers remains up in the air with Inigo Calderon unsure over what January holds.
Blackburn Rovers sent midfielder Jake Garrett out on loan in the summer to give him a shot at finding game time elsewhere, with Bristol Rovers swooping to snap him up.
It looked like a good move for the 21-year-old midfielder, who had put in some solid performances at Championship level but needed minutes to further his development. However, his time with the Gas has gone far from as all parties hoped.
Garrett has featured in just seven League One games and recently, he has been left out of matchday squads completely. That remained the case against Leyton Orient at the weekend as new boss Inigo Calderon took the reins at the Memorial Stadium.
Now, the Spaniard has been quizzed on Garrett’s situation, offering no further clarity over the future of the Blackburn Rovers loanee.
Calderon issued a brief response when asked about the matter by Bristol Live, saying:
“That’s not a question for me but I don’t know. I’m not sure about that.”
The report says Blackburn Rovers had expected Garrett to play far more regularly than he has and the belief is that they will recall him from the Gas this month.
Best for Garrett?
Bristol Rovers boss Calderon might not be sure of what the immediate future holds for Blackburn Rovers loan man Garrett, but it feels increasingly likely that his stint will be cut short.
The fact he has remained out of the squad under new management and said boss has no idea what his future holds suggests there’s no place in the plans for Garrett. His parent club will know that can’t continue, so a recall feels inevitable.
The sooner that decision is made, the better. It will allow plenty of time for Rovers to weigh up their next move.
Where next?
It remains to be seen what comes after an inevitable recall, but Blackburn Rovers will be free to loan Garrett out again. He didn’t play a competitive game for them this season before heading out on loan, so he won’t be impacted by the two-club limit.
Although the midfielder hasn’t found opportunities with Bristol Rovers, the former Liverpool and Everton youngster is definitely still capable of playing and finding success at League One level. As such, perhaps another side in the third-tier looks to take him on for the rest of the season.
It’s not out of the question that he stays at Ewood Park though, with Eustace likely to welcome another body in midfield given Lewis Travis’ injury.
