The72’s writers offer their Oxford United vs Peterborough United prediction ahead of the League One play-off semi-final clash on Saturday.
Oxford United come into the first leg of their play-off semi-final clash looking to repeat their previous thrashing over Peterborough United.
Only three weeks ago, the Yellows hammered Posh 5-0 at the Kassam Stadium. That result was part of a late upturn in form that lifted Des Buckingham’s side to a 5th place finish in the League One table.
They now embark on the lottery of the play-offs though, with form out the window and three wins separating them and the Championship.
Peterborough United meanwhile had a play-off spot wrapped up before the end of the season, meaning they’ve had a chance to rest up some key players before embarking on the final games of their campaign.
They drew 3-3 with Bolton Wanderers on the final day and finished the season in 4th.
Having won the EFL Trophy and earned a play-off finish with a young group, the Posh will be looking to turn this good campaign into a fantastic one by sealing a return to the Championship.
Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…
James Ray
“After a historic collapse in their play-off campaign last year, Peterborough United will be out for redemption this time around as they look to end their season on a high.
“Oxford United found momentum at the right time and of course, they thrashed the Posh in their meeting just a few weeks ago. That should be a huge source of confidence for the hosts.
“However, when it comes to experience in this situation, I just wonder whether Darren Ferguson will get the better of Des Buckingham in a battle of wits.
“Of course, this is a two-leg game, but I can see the Posh heading back to London Road with a slender advantage.”
Oxford United vs Peterborough United prediction: 1-2
Harry Mail
“This will be a close game between two decent sides in League One. Oxford United head into it in confident mood after booking their place in the play-offs with a 2-1 away win at Exeter City on the final day.
“The U’s will want to make home advantage count in the first leg and take a lead heading into the second leg at London Road.
“Peterborough United have the experience of the play-offs from last year when they lost to Sheffield Wednesday and will want to bounce back from that.
“However, they head into this one without a win in their last two matches. I think it’ll be tight at the Kassam Stadium and I’m going for a draw.”
Oxford United vs Peterborough United prediction: 1-1
