Reading are preparing an offer for out-of-contract Maidenhead United man Reece Smith this summer, according to Football League World.

Reading have had a great season all things considered and are with a chance of finishing in the play-off places. Despite all of the off-field problems the Royals have and losing their head coach, they currently sit 8th in League One.

Noel Hunt’s side are in great form too, unbeaten since January 28th. With the play-off places just two points away, Hunt will be hoping his side will be preparing for a season in the Championship next season.

Those summer preparations have already started too. According to Football League World, Reading are taking a keen interest in Maidenhead United man Reece Smith.

The winger has been in fine form for Maidenhead in the National League, scoring six goals and providing four assists for the club. He also managed one assist in the FA Cup.

Smith is out-of-contract this summer which could make things easier for Reading considering their current embargo. However, with a takeover on the cards, they could have a lot more room for manoeuvre this summer.

Maidenhead’s position

At first glance, it could seem like Maidenhead United will be powerless to stop Smith from leaving this summer. Given his contract status, that could still be the case.

However, the Berkshire outfit are actually in a very strong financial position for a National League side. They received around £4m last summer due to the sale of Max Kilman to West Ham United, meaning they could be a good place to offer Smith a very decent deal.

Considering the current situation Reading find themselves in at the minute, they may not be able to offer Smith a huge deal. They may need to hope that the pull of playing in the EFL can be enough to persuade Smith to make the jump, but that is not always the case for non-league players.

At just 22, Smith could easily get other offers from the EFL that he could feel are better for him.

What next for Reading?

With the Royals closing in on the playoff places, they will be hoping to continue their form in the next few weeks. They face two mid-table sides next up in Blackpool and Peterborough United.

However after that, they face 2nd-placed Wycombe Wanderers who need wins to continue their promotion push. Reading still face a tough task to finish in the top six.
