Birmingham City saw Paul Robinson depart the club in the summer and now, he has landed a role as assistant coach at Watford.

Birmingham City went through a lot of changes last season and it did no good for their fight to stay in the Championship.

The move to sack John Eustace and appoint Wayne Rooney was an ill-advised one and after the latter’s exit, illness forced Tony Mowbray to the sidelines. Mark Venus struggled as his caretaker replacement and Gary Rowett was brought back for a temporary spell until the end of the season.

Rowett brought a familiar face with him to St. Andrew’s too. Paul Robinson, a former Birmingham City defender, started his coaching journey with the Blues and previously assisted Rowett at Millwall.

Now though, after Rowett and his coaching staff moved on at the end of the season, Robinson has landed a new role.

The 45-year-old returns to familiar surroundings once again, this time at Championship side Watford. He has become part of Tom Cleverley’s backroom team as an assistant coach, replacing the departed Javier Pereira.

Robinson started his playing career at Vicarage Road, coming through their academy and playing for them until 2003.

A valuable addition

Cleverley is still cutting his teeth in management having been thrust into the limelight earlier this year. He had only recently started work as the Watford U18s boss performed well as caretaker boss and earned the permanent role.

As such, having someone of vast experience like former Birmingham City coach Robinson will be of great use.

He’s familiar with life at Vicarage Road from his previous time at the helm and has been involved with the coaching of countless Championship games from his time by Rowett’s side at Millwall.

Looking forward

While Robinson embarks on a new role, Birmingham City are focused on an exciting future under new management.

Chris Davies has led a huge overhaul at St. Andrew’s with big financial backing and is out to take the club back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

As such, if the Blues have their way, it might not be long before Robinson is back at the club in the opposing dugout.
