Birmingham City man Grant Hanley is waiting to learn his contract fate and admits he’s understanding of his role on the fringes of the team.

Birmingham City have made some notable investments into the playing squad this season. However, in the winter, they struck a free transfer deal for Grant Hanley to bolster the BCFC defensive ranks.

The 59-time Scotland international was approaching the end of his contract at Norwich City and had dropped down the pecking order Johannes Hoff Thorup. He’s found more action with the Blues but has remained on the fringes of the starting XI.

Hanley was handed his first League One start at the weekend, playing 90 minutes in the 2-1 win over Burton Albion. It was his 14th appearance for City, who have already secured the third-tier title.

Speaking post-game, the Birmingham City man shared that he arrived with the understanding that minutes were going to be hard to come by given the strength of the centre-back options available to Chris Davies. Nonetheless, he feels part of the journey at St. Andrew’s and suggested he would be keen to pen an extended deal.

As quoted by Birmingham Live, the BCFC man said:

“At the time it was more to go somewhere where I felt I could add value.

“I looked at it and knew it was going to be tough to get game time because of how the lads were playing and the calibre of players that are here.

“From speaking to the manager and knowing some of the lads, I knew the type of club it was and the ambition.

“I wanted to be involved in the second half of the season and past that, let’s see what happens. I’m at a stage in my career now where I can’t look too far ahead. It’s tomorrow’s training really, let’s get through that and then the next one.

“I feel like I can add value and I’ve got something to offer so let’s see.”
