Shrewsbury Town boss Gareth Ainsworth has confirmed his ‘interest’ in signing Jason McCarthy following his exit from Wycombe Wanderers.
Shrewsbury Town are keen on a potential move for the defender this winter.
McCarthy, 29, has recently cut ties with Wycombe Wanderers by mutual consent and will be weighing up his options.
He is a player who Ainsworth knows already and he has said, as per a report by the Shropshire Star:“There will be huge conspiracy theories about why he has left just before the window. Jason he is a player I have worked and signed three or four times at Wycombe.
“He is an outstanding professional. All the factors will come in that I have mentioned will come into whether we can get someone like Jason McCarthy in. He is a great pro and a real good defender. There is obviously an interest in Jason, but we will have to see where that goes.”
Shrewsbury Town eye free agent
Shrewsbury Town could see McCarthy as someone to bolster their defensive ranks.
The right-back, who can play in the centre as well if needed, is a product of the Southampton academy.
He rose up through the ranks of the Saints and was a regular for them at various different youth levels.
The Southampton-born man went on to play once for the first-team and was loaned out as a youngster to Wycombe Wanderers and Walsall to get some experience.
McCarthy then moved to Adams Park on a permanent basis in 2018 following a spell at Barnsley.
He spent a year back with the Chairboys before Millwall lured him away.
However, Ainsworth signed him again in 2020 on an initial loan deal that was later made permanent.
He has since made 121 games for Wycombe Wanderers altogether, seven of which have come in this campaign, and he has scored four goals from the back.
After his recent departure, he said: “It’s been a tough decision to come to, but I feel like it’s the right time to leave. The club is in amazing hands and it’s a really exciting time, but for me it’s time to step away and watch on as a fan.”
What now?
Shrewsbury Town want him but time will tell whether he reunites with Ainsworth again.
The Shrews are sat bottom of the table after a tough campaign to date.
They face Wigan Athletic away this weekend.
