Stockport County have signed goalkeeper Max Metcalfe following his exit from Middlesbrough, as announced by their official club website

Stockport County have landed the stopper on a free transfer and have handed him a one-year development contract. They are preparing for life in League One following their promotion from League Two along with Wrexham, Mansfield Town and Crawley Town

Metcalfe, 20, has been released by Boro this summer following the expiration of his deal at the Riverside Stadium. He has now swiftly found himself a new home in the Football League ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The Hatters’ Head of Goalkeeping Nick Colgan has told their website: “I’m delighted to welcome Max into our goalkeeping group at Stockport County. I’m very much looking forward to working with him over the coming weeks and months – he has all the attributes required to be a successful goalkeeper, we’re excited to see him continue his development with us.”

Who is this?

Stockport County new boy

Metcalfe will bolster Stockport County’s goalkeeping department and will provide competition and depth between the sticks.

He has risen up through the academy ranks at Middlesbrough and was a regular for the Championship side at various different youth levels.

The 6ft 6ich ‘keeper penned professional terms for the first time back in 2021 and subsequently became a regular for their Under-23’s team. However, he never made a first-team appearance for Michael Carrick’s side in the second tier.

Instead, he was loaned out to Spennymoor Town and AFC Fylde to get some experience under his belt in non-league.

The Scotland youth international will now battle it out with Ben Hinchliffe and new boy Corey Addai at Edgeley Park and is a name to keep an eye out for in the future.

Middlesbrough exit

Middlesbrough made the tough decision not to hand Metcalfe an extension this summer. He wasn’t the only player to leave them either, with their retained list confirming that fellow youngsters like Ben Beals, Sam Collins, Joe Gibson, Fenton John, Henry Popple, Jeremy Sivi and Frankie Whelan have departed, as well as scholars JD Costello, George Grant, Amazing Kiasungua and Cameron Simpson.
