Wigan Athletic have a big summer ahead as they look to build on their 12th place finish in League One.

Wigan Athletic have a few players who are due to become free agents this summer.

The Latics were relegated from the Championship last year and will be aiming to get back to the second tier at some point.

Shaun Maloney’s side are yet to publish their retained list as Football League teams start to look ahead. Here is a look at what to expect from the DW Stadium…

Kerr to leave?

Defender Jason Kerr sees his deal expire in late June and his future is up in the air. He was linked with an exit in the January transfer window with Aberdeen said to be interested, as per a report by Press and Journal.

The 27-year-old, who is a former Scotland youth international, has played for St Johnstone in the past and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him head back up the border again in his career. He has been with his current team since 2021.

Players to be released

Left-back Tom Pearce didn’t start for Wigan Athletic in their final two games against Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers with Liverpool loanee Luke Chambers getting in ahead of him. It remains to be seen whether he will be staying put.

Goalkeeper Ben Amos lost his place as number one to the highly-rated Sam Tickle and may need to leave to get regular game time elsewhere.

Callum McManaman only signed a 12-month deal when he moved back to the Latics and at the age of 33, Maloney needs to weigh up whether to retain his services.

Josh Magennis has enjoyed plenty of game time this term and has scored 10 goals in 42 matches. However, like McManaman, he is 33 and doesn’t hold much value in the transfer market.

Potential extensions

Stephen Humphrys has enjoyed a new lease of life at Wigan Athletic and they will surely try and keep hold of him. He was linked with Wrexham this past winter, as per a report by TEAMtalk.

The striker has posted on X this week that the dressing room is the ‘best group of lads’ he has been with.

The Latics are in talks with Jordan Jones over an extension. He has posted on X: “In terms of the future, the club and my agent are working hard together, so let’s see what happens.”
