Wigan Athletic striker Josh Stones is at the centre of a loan transfer battle between York City and Oldham Athletic, according to Alan Nixon.

Wigan Athletic are a club renowned for their development of young players, both in terms of academy graduates and prospects recruited from elsewhere and brought into their ranks.

Among the youngsters to have been in and around the first-team picture in recent seasons is Josh Stones, who was signed from Guiseley in the summer of 2022 after his breakthrough in non-league.

The 20-year-old striker has three goals in 16 games for the Latics but has also found action on loan. A short stint with Ross County didn’t have much fruit to bear, but a brief stay with Oldham Athletic last winter yielded a highly impressive three goals and three assists in four games.

Now, the National League side want him back, but Wigan Athletic starlet Stones has other interest too.

Writing on his Patreon, reporter Alan Nixon says that fifth-tier leaders York City are battling fellow promotion hopefuls Oldham Athletic for a deal for Stones. Wigan are set to loan him out amid the striker’s desire for game time, though the possibility of a permanent move is also mentioned.
