Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has said he is prepared to ‘rely’ on Danny Hylton as a player this season if needed.

Charlton Athletic have confirmed that they have landed the 35-year-old in a player-coach capacity on a short-term basis. He spent time on trial with the League One side over the summer and has done enough now to land a contract.

Hylton, who is from Camden, cut ties with fellow third tier outfit Northampton Town at the end of last season and officially became a free agent in late June. He has since been weighing up his options in the game.

Jones has said, as per the Addicks’ official website: “Danny is someone I know very, very well who is a true professional. He will be an important member of our squad and coaching team. He will push and educate our players and he will live and breathe the club. When needed, he will be someone we can rely on for something different on the pitch.

“He has been with us since the summer and this role is the start of his coaching journey, and I have no doubt he will continue to have a positive impact on our group.”

Charlton Athletic new addition

Charlton Athletic is the start of Hylton’s transition into becoming a coach when he eventually retires.

However, he can still provide competition and depth to their options in attack over the coming months.

The forward is a vastly experienced player in the Football League and his know-how will come in handy in Jones’ dressing room.

Hylton started his career at Aldershot Town and went on to score 53 goals in 226 games for the Shots in all competitions.

Rotherham United snapped him up in 2013 but he wasn’t quite able to make the impact he wanted to in Yorkshire and moved back down south permanently to join Oxford United after a loan spell at AFC Wimbledon.

He fired 30 goals in 101 outings for the U’s to land a switch to Luton Town.

Hylton was then a great servant to the Hatters and helped them rise from League Two to the Championship during his time at Kenilworth Road, finding the net on 62 occasions in 170 games.

Northampton Town acquired him in 2022 and he spent the past couple of years at Sixfields before becoming available.

What now?

Hylton will look to help Charlton Athletic get themselves out of the third tier.

They have made a decent start to the new campaign and won 1-0 away at Shrewsbury Town last time out in the league with Gassan Ahadme on the scoresheet.

Next up for the Addicks is a home clash against Blackpool on Saturday.
