Wigan Athletic boss Shaun Maloney has said Luke Chambers went off last night with ‘muscle tightness’.

Wigan Athletic were forced to substitute the Liverpool loan man at half-time during their 0-0 draw at home to Stevenage in League One. They weren’t able to find a winner and were left with a frustrating point.

Chambers, 20, will now need to be assessed by the Latics over the coming days and has emerged as a doubt for their clash against Gary Caldwell’s Exeter City at The Brick Community Stadium this weekend. James Carragher was brought on in his place at the interval.

Speaking after the game, manager Maloney had this update to share, as per the club website: “Unfortunately it was a muscle tightness and Luke couldn’t carry on. It’s early and we’ll know later the week but he’s doubtful for the weekend.”

In terms of his opinion on the game, he said: “It is a difficult one to assess – there are two parts to it. Without the ball, we were excellent. Stevenage are a really difficult team to play – they get it forward really quickly and have got some really good, strong players.”

Wigan Athletic injury update

Wigan Athletic will be hoping that Chambers will be fine and that isn’t going to be forced to have a spell on the sidelines. More details should come out over the next few days.

The youngster’s return this past summer was a big boost to the Latics.

He first linked up with the North West outfit last January and played 18 times during the second-half of the last campaign before joining Maloney’s men for a second spell in August.

Chambers has been on the books at Liverpool for his whole career to date and has risen up through the academy ranks of the Premier League.

The England youth international has been a regular for the Reds at various different youth levels over recent times and has played four times for their first-team so far.

Prior to his switch to Wigan Athletic, he also had a stint up in Scotland at Kilmarnock and played 16 times for the Rugby Park club.

What now?

The Latics will make checks on him and see if he can play against Exeter City. If not, they have games coming up after that against Peterborough United and Wigan Athletic.

They are 14th in the table and are three points off the play-offs.
