Charlton Athletic head to Roots Hall this weekend to take on Southend United in the first round of the FA Cup.

Charlton Athletic are sat in 12th place in the League One table as they eye promotion to the Championship under the guidance of Nathan Jones. They have 19 points on the board from their first 13 fixture.

The Addicks are four points off the play-offs after their 2-2 draw at home to Wrexham last time out in the league. Striker Matty Godden scored a late penalty for them against the Red Dragons.

They were in Bristol Street Motors Trophy action on Tuesday night against Chelsea U21s. They beat them 3-0 at The Valley with Miles Leaburn scoring a brace, whilst Tyreece Campbell got their other one.

As for Southend United, they are positioned in 14th in the National League. They were relegated to non-league back in 2021.

They have been managed by Kevin Maher over the past few years. The Shrimpers have a few ex-Football League players in their squad like Macauley Bonne, George Moncur and Joe Gubbins, among others.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Harry Mail

“This game will be a test for Charlton Athletic and won’t be easy.

“It is always difficult playing away to a National League side who will have their fans behind them.

“It remains to be seen if Jones will make wholesale changes for this one and the team he puts out is likely to determine the outcome of the tie.

“The Addicks should be too strong in the end for their upcoming opponents but it could be a close match. I think they will just edge it.”

Prediction: Southend United 1-2 Charlton Athletic

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

James Ray

“Before the controversial change, this is one I could have seen going to a replay. However, with them scrapped from this season onwards, I can’t help but feel Charlton Athletic will see their quality shine through.

“Roots Hall is going to be a tough place to go with Southend United not enjoying the strongest of seasons but boasting some fine history in this prestigious competition.

“The National League side should be hopeful of springing a surprise against an out-of-form Addicks side, one that will likely be rotated too. However, I still think the visitors will have just too much for Southend.”

Prediction: Southend United 1-2 Charlton Athletic
