Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith has been subject to interest from League One promotion chasers Wrexham, according to The Star.
High-flying Wrexham are hoping to secure back-to-back promotions to join Sheffield Wednesday in the Championship as they continue their ascent up the English pyramid.
The Red Dragons are fighting for a return to the second-tier for the first time since 1982, having been ever-present at the top end of the League One table so far this season.
They currently find themselves in 3rd place, which can be heavily attributed to their excellent home form.
Now, they’ve got their sights on a winter addition that could further strengthen the promotion push.
As The Star states, Wrexham have taken a keen interest in Sheffield Wednesday striker Michael Smith, who was left out of the SWFC side in the FA Cup defeat against Coventry City.
Smith, 33, is out of contract at the end of the season and may consider a move to Wrexham as one which could provide him with guaranteed game time in the twilight of his career. The club eyed him in the summer but a move never materialised.
Guaranteed goals?
Smith spent the majority of last January window linked with Derby County, only for Sheffield Wednesday to hold onto him for the course of the season.
This season he finds himself as the Owls’ second-top goalscorer with five goals and four assists, behind only Josh Windass.
Smith’s last outing in League One saw him promoted with SWFC, finishing as the Owls’ top goalscorer as they were promoted back to the Championship via the play-offs. He would be another target man option for Wrexham as they look to rise from the third-tier.
Another striker?
Wrexham aren’t short by any means on strikers and it begs the question, do they actually need Sheffield Wednesday man Smith?
Ollie Palmer, Paul Mullin, Mo Faal, Steven Fletcher, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and the injured Jack Marriott all comprise of the Red Dragons’ attacking arsenal this season.
This also excludes the out-on-loan Sam Dalby and Billy Waters. Dalby in particular, has excelled in Scotland as he finds himself joint top of the goal scoring charts in the Scottish Premiership with 10 league goals.
Despite this, it’s Elliot Lee leading Wrexham’s scoring statistics so far this season with six goals from midfield and Max Cleworth from the back not far behind on five, which might suggest that more quality is in fact needed in Parkinson’s frontline. Smith could provide that, but time will tell if a move comes to fruition for the SWFC man.
