Newport County ‘keeper Nick Townsend is attracting EFL interest ahead of the summer window, according to Pete O’Rourke.

Newport County have had a fairly mediocre season but they are set for another year in League Two. Next season will be their 11th in a row in the 4th tier and they sit in 18th place with eight games to go.

Nelson Jardim has done a decent enough job with the club in his first season. However, he will be hoping for a better run next season and he needs a good summer window to make that happen.

His plans could be impacted before the window even opens though as one of his better players draws attention from elsewhere.

Newport County goalkeeper Nick Townsend is out of contract this summer and has attracted a lot of interest from other EFL sides, according to Pete O’Rourke.

Townsend has been with the Exiles for five years now, racking up 201 appearances. He has managed 11 clean sheets this season in 35 games between the sticks.

At 30 Townsend may feel this is his last chance to move on to a bigger club. He has never fully tested himself at a higher level.

Unfinished business at higher levels?

Townsend had never quite nailed down a starting spot anywhere until he made the move to Newport County. It even took him three seasons to become the number one with County.

Despite this, he has had times at League One and Championship level in his career. He joined Barnsley after leaving Birmingham City and managed eight games in both the second and third tier.

After failing to impress much in either of those spells between the sticks, he may want another shot. This summer could be the perfect opportunity for him to right those wrongs and prove himself at that level.

What next for Newport?

Newport County’s season is going to come to a slow end. Despite being in 18th, they are actually closer to the play-offs than the relegation zone.

However, they could play a big part in who they face in League Two next season. They face three play-off hopefuls over their next four games in Bromley, Notts County and Colchester United.

They also face 23rd-place Carlisle United who are fighting for their lives to remain in the EFL. A win for Newport County against them could be a huge blow to Carlisle who are running out of time at the bottom.
