Sunderland are considering recalling Matty Young from Salford City after a lack of minutes with the League Two side, as per the Sunderland Echo.

Sunderland are a side known for their academy and the players that it has brought through over the past few years.

Current team captain Dan Neil is a graduate of the Academy of Light and is joined in the first-team by Chris Rigg and Anthony Patterson as fellow homegrown talents.

The Black Cats have graduates across the EFL. The likes of Josh Maja, Lynden Gooch and many more are plying their trade at Championship level this season.

Sunderland have been particularly successful with goalkeepers in recent years too with Patterson and current England number one Jordan Pickford a previous graduate. The next on that conveyor belt is Matty Young, who has spent this season at Salford City on loan in League Two.

However, according to the Sunderland Echo, that spell could be cut short.

Young has only made seven appearances for the Ammies with first League start coming on Tuesday night in a 2-0 win over Harrogate Town.

A decision is yet to be made on his future but the Black Cats do have a recall clause available to them should they wish to use it. Should he be recalled, Young would likely spend the rest of the campaign playing for another side of a similar level.

Young signed a new long-term deal with Sunderland last week and is an England U19 international.

Who is the manager of Blackpool?

Impressive in his bit-part role

Despite the lack of appearances Young has made an impression. On his League debut last night he picked up an 8.1 match rating for Salford City, according to FOTMob.com.

He was also awarded man of the match at the weekend after saving a penalty in Salford’s FA Cup win over Cheltenham Town.

It shows the ability Young has can make him an influential player at senior level despite his age, perhaps hence why Sunderland are considering sending him somewhere he can get more game time.

Patterson’s long-term successor?

If Young’s form keeps up with the Ammies it could pose a big question to Sunderland over Anthony Patterson’s future.

The current number one is linked with a big move soon. Manchester City and Liverpool have been linked in the past whilst Manchester United and Tottenham eyeing a move this January.

Sunderland are open to selling their stars but only on their terms, so over the next couple of windows, it would not be too much of a shock if they were to opt to cash in on Patterson. Young could step in soon and the club may feel they would be better off with the funds to be used elsewhere.
