Wigan Athletic are targeting a move for Accrington Stanley defender Connor O’Brien, according to reporter Alan Nixon on his Patreon page.

Wigan Athletic are interested in luring the right-back to The Brick Community Stadium in the upcoming January transfer window. The player has caught their eye in League Two over recent times and has emerged on their radar.

O’Brien, 20, has broken into Accrington Stanley’s first-team recently and is being tipped for a bright future in the game. He has made 14 league appearances in all competitions so far this season and is a key member of John Doolan’s squad.

In this latest update regarding his situation in Lancashire, journalist Nixon has claimed on Patreon the Latics are keeping tabs on his development and are weighing up a move. His contract expires in the summer of 2026 meaning his current club are under no pressure just yet to cash in on him.

Wigan Athletic could see O’Brien as someone to add more competition and depth to their defensive ranks.

He is young and has potential to develop further down the line if they were to snap him up.

After penning a new deal with Accrington Stanley in May, he said, as per BBC Sport: “I’m buzzing, it’s been a long time coming. I’m just happy that we’ve got it over the line and now I can start preparing for next season. It means a lot to me and my family, because everyone supports Accrington.”

O’Brien has played exactly 50 games for the fourth tier outfit to date.

He joined his current club at the age of eight and has since risen up through their academy ranks.

The full-back was a regular for their youth teams before he penned his first professional terms back in 2022.

O’Brien was loaned out to Radcliffe in non-league a couple of years ago to get some experience under his belt.

He then made his Accrington Stanley debut in February 2023 in a league fixture against Port Vale and hasn’t looked back since.

What now?

Wigan Athletic are admirers and it remains to be seen at this stage whether they will lodge an approach for the Republic of Ireland youth international.

Shaun Maloney’s men were beaten 2-0 at home by Leyton Orient this weekend and are now only two points above the drop zone.

Meanwhile, Accrington Stanley lost 2-1 against Bromley.
