When chips are down always good to look back. Leicester made a special double act in the 1973-74 season, winning both home and away vs. Manchester United in the league. Looking back on the two games it had some unusual happenings. A penalty to Manchester United was scored by their goalkeeper, Alex Stepney.

In a very difficult season for Manchester United, ending in relegation, Alex Stepney also scored on penalty vs. Birmingham. This made him their joint top goalscorer at Christmas.

Both games, home and away, were played with just a few weeks in between. Leicester were at home on September 5. The away game at Old Trafford was on the September 12. Leicester won the home game 1-0, at Old Trafford it ended with a 2-1 win.

Looking at the home game, Leicester had the following line-up. Shilton in goal, Whitworth and Rofe on the right and left back. Graham Cross and Malcolm Munro in central defence. Jon Sammels, Alan Birchenall and Keith Weller in midfield. Mike Stringfellow, Frank Worthington and Len Glover up front. Stringfellow and Glover out wide. It was a special line-up of good and complete skills in a good set up.

The only goal of the game was of course scored by the one and only, Frank Worthington. Gerry Daly, later a player at Leicester, was in the Man Utd line-up.

The rare thing happened in the away game 7 days later. Alex Stepney scored from the penalty spot. He put the ball in the net behind Peter Shilton. Leicester were 2-0 up at the time, scoring their goals earlier in the game. Leicester netted early on. Keith Weller gave Leicester the lead with just 7 minutes gone, Mike Stringfellow scored the second in the 14th minute.

Leicester had the exactly same line up as they fielded in the home game. Loved this team that ended 9th in the league in the 1973-74 season. They also reached the FA Cup semi-final. They lost to the winner in the end, Liverpool, in a second leg replay at Villa Park.
