According to Fabrice Hawkins, Jean-Louis Gasset will sign a four-month contract with Olympique de Marseille on Tuesday.

The former Côte d'Ivoire manager will replace Gennaro Gattuso until the end of the season, when it is expected that Marseille will then begin approaching alternative candidates, with Christophe Galtier figuring high on their shortlist to become the next permanent manager.

Gasset arrives in the city with his backroom staff and will be on the bench for Marseille on Thursday for his first game at the club when they play the second leg of their Europa League tie with FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

Gasset faces difficult task at Marseille

His task will be foremost to progress into the next stages of the Europa League, but also to attempt to rescue a league campaign that has fallen wildly off-pace as the club sits eight points clear of the European positions.

The appointment of Gasset will mark the fourth manager to take charge of Marseille in this hectic season as he follows Marcelino, Jacques Abardonado, and Gattuso in taking the reigns of the club.

On a personal level, Gasset will look to put the disappointment of his time with the Côte d'Ivoire behind him. He had quit the role midway through the Africa Cup of Nations after a disappointing group stage that saw The Elephants qualify for the knockout rounds but come third in their group. After Gasset left, the Côte d'Ivoire then went on to win the entire tournament.
