Montpellier condemn Téji Savanier for outburst as captain apologises

It has been a torrid year for Montpellier HSC. The club are currently adrift at the bottom of Ligue 1 with just nine points from their opening 15 matches. During that time, they have registered just two wins.
The Coupe de France could have provided La Paillade with a bit of relief from their dire league situation. However, it wasn’t to be. They were knocked out by fourth tier side Le Puy. Not only that, they lost heavily (4-0). Captain Téji Savanier has come in for criticism for some of his performances this season and during the loss over the weekend, he was teased by the Le Puy fans.
An amateur video caught a remark from the MHSC captain that has now drawn condemnation from his own club. Teased by a fan, he was asked “Last in Ligue 1 – does that hurt?”. Savanier replied: “When you’re being paid €210,000 a month, no.”
That video has since gone viral on social media and Montpellier, via their X (formerly Twitter) account, have now condemned their captain’s behaviour. “The club does not endorse his comments, which don’t represent the values of the club, nor its captain,” said the statement.
Savanier added, “I want to apologise for my comments. I sincerely regret this heated reaction. I am going through a tough period, like the team, but that does not justify what I said. I am completely committed to fighting for this jersey and I will continue to fight with my teammates to rectify the situation. We will not give up.”
