Raphaël Varane (31) shocked the footballing world in September 2024, announcing his retirement from the sport. Four months later, he was back on the pitch, competing in a charity match in Monaco on Wednesday night.

The former France international had been plagued by injuries throughout his career and they caught up with him. He joined Como in the summer following the expiry of his contract at Manchester United, however, he quickly suffered yet another injury and it was the straw that broke the camel’s back with the centre-back announcing his retirement from international football soon after.

However, he made a return to the pitch in the Principality of Monaco on Wednesday night as the Barbagiuan’s took on Cirque FC in the Fight AIDS Cup inside the Stade Louis II. Varane played for the former, who succumbed to a 4-5 loss on the night. Former France internationals such as Patrice Evra, Franck Ribery, and Robert Pires also competed in the charity match.
