L’Equipereports that Botafogo attacking midfielder Thiago Almada (23) will undergo a medical with Lyon and secure his switch to the Ligue 1 side. The Argentina international previously confirmed last month he’ll link up with Pierre Sage’s Gones, despite the DNCG ruling that Lyon would be handed a transfer ban. Because Botafogo and Lyon are both part of John Textor’s Eagle Football group, Almada’s switch from Brazil to France will be free, which will allow Lyon to circumvent their transfer ban.

Almada joined Botafogo from MLS franchise Atlanta United over a €19,6m deal. The 2022 World Cup winner with Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina has won the double with Botafogo last year, lifting the Brasileirão Betano as well as the Copa Libertadores. L’Equipe adds that Almada will land at Lyon on Friday to undergo his medical over the weekend. Almada could make his debut with his new side next Wednesday as Lyon face Bourgoin in the Coupe de France RO32.
