Luis Diaz’s future at Liverpool remains up in the air.
The Colombian star has been a key player at Anfield since completing his £49m move from Porto back in 2022 and remains an essential part of Arne Slot’s team on Merseyside.
With a contract expiring in 2027, it is uncertain if the Premier League leaders will offer the winger a new deal, having turned 28 this year. As a result, Fabrizio Romano stated last week that there is a possibility that Diaz will leave Liverpool at the end of the season.
Barcelona have shown interest in Diaz for some time and if an offer arrives for the Colombian star this summer, Liverpool are likely to accept it.
Should the winger want to remain at Anfield for another season, the Reds star made a strong case for himself with his two performances for Colombia during the current international break.
Liverpool’s Luis Diaz shines for Colombia
Diaz was one Liverpool player who needed a good international break after a difficult last two games for the Reds in which they were knocked out of the Champions League by PSG and defeated in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle.
It seems the Colombian star has responded well to this as the winger scored his country’s only goal in a 2-1 defeat to Brazil last Friday, before putting in an impressive display against Paraguay on Tuesday night.
In the 2-2 draw in Colombia, Diaz opened the scoring for Los Cafeteros after one minute, before the Liverpool star would bag an assist as Nestor Lorenzo’s team went 2-0 up inside 13 minutes.
Diaz would end the game with a goal and an assist. He also created two big chances, made three key passes, had two shots on target, completed 73% of his passes, had four successful dribbles, made four recoveries and won 10 ground duels.
This is the player Liverpool need to see on a regular basis, and hopefully, his trip away with Colombia will influence the remaining nine games of the season that the winger has left with the Reds.
Luis Diaz can save his Liverpool career
One of the main reasons Diaz’s future at Liverpool is up for debate is due to the number of goal contributions the winger produces throughout a season.
The Colombian has been a key part of Slot's squad during the current campaign, with the 28-year-old featuring 42 times for the Reds, producing 13 goals and five assists.
Season | Games | Goals | Assists |
24/25 | 42 | 13 | 5 |
23/24 | 51 | 13 | 5 |
22/23 | 21 | 5 | 3 |
Liverpool fans expect more from Diaz with the talent the Colombian star has, as he has scored just two goals in his last 12 Premier League matches.
The Reds forward matched this in just two games with Colombia and with the Merseyside club pushing for a Premier League title throughout the remainder of the 2024/25 campaign, Slot needs to get more out of Diaz, and the winger needs to step up for his Dutch coach.
Should the 28-year-old do this, Liverpool will find it hard to let him go during the summer and if the Colombian star manages to save his Anfield career, the current international break will be seen as a key moment.
